Waiting to enter the combat in Great Britain

RAF Fighter Command was reluctant to Polish airmen. The British doubted their spirits because of the two lost campaigns – in Poland and in France. It was supposed the the combat value of the Polish pilots was very low. Since the RAF loses still grew, the decision about forming two Polish bomber squadrons (300 and 301) as well as two Polish fighter squadrons (302 and 303) was made.
Training was performed very slowly. For a long time the British commanders did not believe the Poles could fly modern fighters.
Some Poles were detached to RAF squadrons. The first Polish pilot who shot a German airplane was F/O Antoni Ostowicz. It happened on July 19, 1940. But the most famous was Sgt. Antoni Głowacki – on August 24, 1940 he shot five German aircraft and became “the fighter ace" in one day.

Training of Poles in Great Britain was performed very slowly. British commanders doubted their skills and were reluctant to involve the Polish airmen in combat duties.
